Mechanical reading of ferroelectric polarization

چکیده

Flexoelectricity is a property of dielectric materials whereby they exhibit electric polarization induced by strain gradients; while this effect can be negligible at the macroscale, it become dominant nanoscale, where gradients turn out to tremendous. Previous works have demonstrated that flexoelectricity coupled with piezoelectricity enables mechanical writing ferroelectric polarization. When considering out-of-plane polarization, coupling insert asymmetry system and enable distinction oppositely polarized domains, based on their nanomechanical response. Using atomic force microscopy and, more specifically, contact resonance techniques, exploited mechanically read sign in non-destructive way. We measured variety materials, from single crystal thin films, domains are down always appear stiffer than domains. In article, we demonstrate experimentally phenomenon size-dependent strongly enhanced when dimension material reduced nanoscale films. Ultimately, how sensitivity reading improved appropriately tuning stiffness cantilevers.

Mechanical writing of ferroelectric polarization.

Ferroelectric materials are characterized by a permanent electric dipole that can be reversed through the application of an external voltage, but a strong intrinsic coupling between polarization and deformation also causes all ferroelectrics to be piezoelectric, leading to applications in sensors and high-displacement actuators. A less explored property is flexoelectricity, the coupling between...

Ferroelectric control of spin polarization.

A current drawback of spintronics is the large power that is usually required for magnetic writing, in contrast with nanoelectronics, which relies on "zero-current," gate-controlled operations. Efforts have been made to control the spin-relaxation rate, the Curie temperature, or the magnetic anisotropy with a gate voltage, but these effects are usually small and volatile. We used ferroelectric ...
